(More customer reviews)This is one of the best books I have ever encountered about practical neurology. As one of the house officers to Dr. Landau, and after the passage of time, I remember clearly his logic when rounding with him and discussing patients in the morning.Even during my oral examination, soon to be defunct, I still remembered his words:"The history is everything"."How do you know if the patient is telling or not the truth"."What this patient needs is a good doctor that will take care of him after he leaves the hospital"What can you do for this guy, how can we help him?
Dr. Landau's book is full of vignettes.I vouch for the veracity of the vignettes, as one of the many that have faced his inquisitive mind after a long night on-call at Barnes Hospital.Clinical Neuromythology is organized to reflect the actual cases a house officer will encounter while working in the hospital. It mainly deals with myths in neurology as they are transferred from generation to generation of neurologists, sometimes without much evidence to support them.Dr. Landau squarely attacks the classical approach to spasticity, the public efforts to "degrease" americans without paying attention to the role of obesity and other more important factors; the fiasco of the Deprenyl studies in Parkinson disease; the believe that dorsal rhizotomy is evidence-based when the treatment is actually of unproven efficacy, and much more.I highly recommend this book for all those who are involved in the decision-making process to treat patients in the field of Neurology. It will make you think twice whether your decisions are based on mythology or reality.
