I've read this book a couple of times over the years. I keep it in the lab and it generally sits not too far away from our CE instruments. When new researchers come in this book is the practical first step for a good intro.
If your new to the CE world and want to learn some practical CE or
If you want to jump in to a lab and make CE practically work for you without peicing the concepts together on your own from random literature or
If your just interested in learning some basics or refreshing your knowledge about capillary electrophoresis (and various modes of separation therein) then this is a great book. Chapters are written in very logical order and concepts are clearly outlined. Its not perfect and yes there may be a few minor errors but this book is VERY practical and its utility in troubleshooting CE far outstrips any minor errors that may arise in the text from editing. For example, one equation uses a capital letter V instead of lowercase v that if your not careful you'll miss but this is an editing mistake and easily picked up if you follow the equation derivation outlined within the text(which is kept to a minimum in this book anyway).
If you want a great comprehensive theoretical 1000+ page book on CE then go with Khaledi's "High Performance Capillary Electrophoresis", you won't be dissapointed. I find however, that the Weinberger text is practical and useful in my lab. Sure wish a new addition with updated references would come out to cover some of the newer aspects which are left out in this edition (such as microfluidic applications). Overall I give it 4 stars for its practicality and functionality. I have yet to see a new student go through our capillary electrophroesis lab that didn't like how this book reads.

Product Description:
In the 1980s, capillary electrophoresis (CE) joined high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) as the most powerful separation technique available to analytical chemists and biochemists. Published research using CE grew from 48 papers in the year of commercial introduction (1988) to 1200 in 1997. While only a dozen major pharmaceutical and biotech companies have reduced CE to routine practice, the applications market is showing real or potential growth in key areas, particularly in the DNA marketplace for genomic mapping and forensic identification. For drug development involving small molecules (including chiral separations), one CE instrument can replace 10 liquid chromatographs in terms of speed of analysis. CE also uses aqueous rather than organic solvents and is thus environmentally friendlier than HPLC. The second edition of Practical Capillary Electrophoresis has been extensively reorganized and rewritten to reflect modern usage in the field, with an emphasis on commercially available apparatus and reagents. This authoritative and very comprehensible treatment builds on the author's extensive experience as an instructor of short courses for the American Chemical Society and for industry.
