Product Description:
This text on the medical care of laboratory animals is thoroughly revised and updated to reflect advances in understanding and technique since the publication of the first edition. The new edition preserves the user-friendly format in its overview of the medical basics on mice, rats, Mongolian gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, chinchillas, rabbits, ferrets and nonhuman primates. In each chapter, the authors address a primary concern, such as behaviour, anatomic and physiological features, breeding and reproduction, husbandry, handling and restraint, blood collection, urine collection, drug administration, anaesthesia, surgery, postoperative care, therapeutic agents, diseases and neoplasia. In this edition, these entries include information on new diseases, treatments and techniques. The second edition also provides an added chapter on regulations and policies governing the care and use of laboratory animals and another on serologic testing and quality control. New line drawings of restraint and other techniques should enhance the book's value as a guide to the researcher, student and clinician.Convenient tables supply essential biological and physiological data, blood volumes and information on anaesthetic agents and tranquilizers, and analgesic, antimicrobial, antifungal and antiparasitic agents. Appendices include normal values for haematological data and serum biochemical data, as well as a listing of organizations in laboratory animal medicine.

Handbook of Laboratory Animal Management and Welfare Review

Handbook of Laboratory Animal Management and Welfare
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a very practical, quick read, reviewing appropriate/humane procedures for handling all types of research animals during behavior tests, pre-surgical, surgical, and post-surgical care. Based on British regulations, but applicable anywhere. I would say it should be a required read for anyone who is going to be working with lab animals. Both for the animals' sake and your research results' sake.

Blessed Are The Foals (Howell reference books) Review

Blessed Are The Foals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book focuses almost exclusively on the foal. Dr. Lose has written another book, Blessed are the Brood mares, to cover the mare half of foaling. I enjoyed this book, but found it a bit spare on the actuallyfoaling procedure. It extensively covers diseases and illnesses ...something that occurs, but not to all of us. I would have preferred moretime spent on how to keep the foal healthy and happy. I'll call the vetsover if my foal gets sick and I'll trust their opinion the best. Dr. Losecovers a long length of time in the foal's life, examining vaccinationsduring the first year, handling the foal (limited), turning the mare andfoal out (some good tips there), and feeds. She is an advocate of earlyweaning of the foal at 3 months of age. This is a debatable practice, butif you are interested in it, she seems to have her reasoning explained.

Product Description:
Blessed Are the Foals has been revised and updated to give those who care for the young equine from birth through its first year of life the information they need to make that critical period successful. Once again, Dr. M. Phyllis Lose draws on her decades of experience in equine veterinary practice to explain how to evaluate the foal's health and to recognize when professional help is needed. Profusely illustrated with photographs taken in her practice, Dr. Lose describes in simple, easy-to-understand language for owners, foaling attendants and caregivers what is normal or typical and how to troubleshoot situations that depart from the norm. Beginning with the delivery, emergencies such as failure to breathe, to rise and to nurse are addressed along with such problems as infections and congenital, hereditary and developmental conditions. Other topics include medication and diet-with the emphasis on foal nutrition to meet the changing needs of the newborn-exercise and the special needs of the premature, twin, orphaned and rejected foal. In addition, Dr. Lose discusses current veterinary and husbandry practices and gives candid judgments about their efficacy. Blessed Are the Foals is, in effect, the companion volume to Dr. Lose's Blessed Are the Brood Mares-the acknowledged classic on the breeding and care of mares through gestation. Yet again Dr. Lose's expertise, compassion and loving regard for all horses is apparent, along with her desire to offer support to all who would look after them.
