Clinical Neuromythology and Other Arguments and Essays, Pertinent and Impertinent Review

Clinical Neuromythology and Other Arguments and Essays, Pertinent and Impertinent
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is one of the best books I have ever encountered about practical neurology. As one of the house officers to Dr. Landau, and after the passage of time, I remember clearly his logic when rounding with him and discussing patients in the morning.Even during my oral examination, soon to be defunct, I still remembered his words:"The history is everything"."How do you know if the patient is telling or not the truth"."What this patient needs is a good doctor that will take care of him after he leaves the hospital"What can you do for this guy, how can we help him?

Dr. Landau's book is full of vignettes.I vouch for the veracity of the vignettes, as one of the many that have faced his inquisitive mind after a long night on-call at Barnes Hospital.Clinical Neuromythology is organized to reflect the actual cases a house officer will encounter while working in the hospital. It mainly deals with myths in neurology as they are transferred from generation to generation of neurologists, sometimes without much evidence to support them.Dr. Landau squarely attacks the classical approach to spasticity, the public efforts to "degrease" americans without paying attention to the role of obesity and other more important factors; the fiasco of the Deprenyl studies in Parkinson disease; the believe that dorsal rhizotomy is evidence-based when the treatment is actually of unproven efficacy, and much more.I highly recommend this book for all those who are involved in the decision-making process to treat patients in the field of Neurology. It will make you think twice whether your decisions are based on mythology or reality.

The Dystonia Patient: A Guide to Practical Management Review

The Dystonia Patient: A Guide to Practical Management
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Okun's remarkable 248+ page practical guide, The Dystonia Patient, is the first book that exclusively focuses on patients diagnosed with the rare movement disorder, dystonia. It is well written, efficiently organized with plenty of gems and advice for healthcare providers, who provide direct care to this complex patient population. Most importantly, it highlights the role and application of the multidisciplinary care model for these patients; an under-emphasized care model that is intensely needed for these patients and their families. Many require assistance from a variety of health providers including the physical therapist, occupational therapist, psychologist, pain management specialists, neurosurgeons, nurse practitioners etc.
Okun has truly given much thought to the total concept of "holistic ", "gestalt" care for these patients when writing this guide. It is quite obvious that the information, provided in a positive,easy-to-read approach, has been thoroughly researched in collaboration with other healthcare providers. I highly applaud the author, a practicing physician specializing in movement disorders, for recognizing the needs and the care required by these patients.
I highly recommend this book for nursing and medical students, newly practicing neurologists including those ready to enter the arena of movement disorders. The book is an absolute necessity in the office- libraries of all those providing care to the unique Dystonia Patient, as well as organizations providing support to patients and their families.A true Gem of a Must-Read for all !

Parkinsons Disease and Other Movement Disorders (Oxford Specialist Handbooks in Neurology) with DVD Review

Parkinsons Disease and Other Movement Disorders with DVD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a Neurologist currently training in the field of movement disorders. I think this is an excellent book for anybody dealing with this group of patients. The book is very well organized and explanations are concise, clear and didactic. Its main strength is how it helps you with the differential diagnosis by using a symptom guided approach. It provides many very useful tables which allow you to keep in mind common and uncommon conditions when facing an unusual patient. It also includes practical information regarding diagnostic tests and treatment (different options, dosages, common side effects). I was amazed at the vast amount of information contained in such a small book. The DVD with patient videos, although a little bit short, is a great extra. The test is also very coherent, probably reflecting that it is the work of very few authors. In summary I would say it covers everything you need to know to work in a Movement Disorders clinic and a little bit more... And you can carry it in your pocket!

Product Description:
Movement disorders are a group of neurological conditions that are characterised by problems with movement - either unwanted movements, such as tremors, jerks or twitches, or slowness and poverty of movement.Parkinson's disease is the most common of these conditions, and it affects approximately 1% of the population. Its treatment is complex, but effective, and there have been many recent exciting developments in the field.Other movement disorders are less common and extremely diverse, so it is difficult for practitioners to become proficient in diagnosing and treating them all. This book will help neurologists and other clinicians in the recognition and treatment of this important group of disorders.Written in a concise, easy-to-use handbook format, it should appeal to a multidisciplinary audience. The text is accompanied by a DVD with video clips illustrating the different movement disorders.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Board Review Review

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Board Review
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The previous two reviewers gave this book both stars. However, as a senior PM&R resident about to finish my residency I can tell you that this book is one of the most popular board review books being used by U.S. residents.

Obviously popularity does not win every contest, however, what this book does do is concisely organize the admittedly vast field and bring out frequently asked questions both from the standpoint of clinical care as well as board type questions which are totally different.

The book is organized into an outline format, with "high yield" points labeled with symbols next to them. All major physiatric topics are covered, some to a lesser degree than others. However, the assumption is that since this is a Board Review, those subjects which carry less weight in terms of questions have less pages devoted to them.

If you are looking for a Board review, I believe this book is currently a good tool to use. The Braddom textbook is too wieldy for the purpose of board studying and one has to filter through too many questions; PM&R Secrets does contain good material however much of it is not board specific and is written in a way that does not lend itself to studying.

The book is a bit rough around the edges. Its outline style makes it concise but at the same time a bit jumpy. As a previous reviewer pointed out it may have a few slightly outdated points but again, for *Board Purposes*, this field has not changed enough to make them drastic points of conflict.

Take what you will from this review. I have no affiliation with the writer or the editor.
